Hawfinch Challenge,Thornton le Dale - 5th January 2018

A small group (three today) of long staying Hawfinches have taken up residence in Thornton le Dale so it would have been rude not to have paid them a visit! (Especially as I had not seen one since 2012!).  The birds are being seen in the vicinity of Rectory Lane and Dog Kennel Lane, but are known to widen their horizons! Arriving at said location, it was soon clear that seeing the birds was going to be a challenge! Numerous close growing, tall trees with thick vegetation, private gardens and poor light added to the challenge. Game on! After about 30 minutes of searching, the Hawfinches started to "show", briefly, very mobile and always in poor light. One moment at the top of a tree, then diving down into the private gardens, allowing "bits" of their bodies to be on show, usually with a twig or leaf covering their heads! A nightmare for the camera! Still, after a couple of hours, I was blessed with some "record shots"!

A good day for other year ticks with Buzzard, Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Siskin, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Treecreeper nearby.
